TRIATHLON & IRONMAN FAQ
-
Do I need to be fit to start triathlon training?
Nope! You don’t need to be fit to start—you just need a willingness to begin. I’ll meet you where you are and help you build from there.
-
How long does it take to train for an IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3?
For most beginners:
IRONMAN 70.3: 16–24 weeks
Full IRONMAN: 24–30+ weeks
It depends on your current fitness, background, and schedule. That’s why personalised planning matters.
I generally recommend giving 12 months to train for a full distance IRONMAN. This allows for time spent not training due to work, family, illness, holiday, weather etc.
-
Do I need expensive gear to get started?
Start with what you have—basic swim gear, a functioning bike, running shoes.
I also strongly recommend as a minimum a GPS sports watch - this doesn’t have to be super fancy, a budget Garmin Forerunner 255 or Vivoactivemove 5 will work.
Over time, we can talk about optional upgrades like smart trainers and power meters. If you are a competitive athlete - you will get the best results from training with power, heart rate and pace.
-
I’m nervous about open water swimming—can you help?
Yes! Many of my athletes feel this way - swimming was my barrier to IRONMAN and my weakest discipline.
I provide swim programming, mindset strategies, and technique resources to help you gain confidence.
If you are in Brisbane, we can chat about in person swim sessions to help you with this.
-
Can I still have a life while training for IRONMAN?
100%. My job is to help you train smart—not just hard—so your plan works with your lifestyle, not against it. Communication about your life schedule and commitments is all you need for me to adjust your training.
-
Do I need a coach to complete an IRONMAN?
You can self-train, but working with a coach increases your chances of success, reduces injury risk, and helps you train more efficiently around your life.
If you choose to go the non-coached route, I strongly recommend looking at using the TriDot training platform. It is IRONMAN’s official training platform and capable of getting you to a world championship qualification.
Try it for free for 2 months by joining the TriDot project. I am also happy to answer any questions you have about the platform during those two months.

Most athletes will choose based on their budget or ambitions. If you are still unsure, book a free consult! We’ll chat about your goals, preferences, and what support you need, then match you with the best-fit plan and platform.
-
Do you coach for shorter distances like Sprint or Olympic triathlon?
Yes! Although I specialise in IRONMAN70.3 and IRONMAN distance, I coach athletes training for Sprint, Olympic, and multisport events like duathlon or aquathlon. Often these are stepping stones for athletes looking to complete an IRONMAN.
